The Best Month To Start A Boutique

Launching a boutique and becoming successful is based on luck, it requires a strategy laid out months before you're opening doors swing open. Much of that strategy revolves around what month you should open. In this blog we're going to answer that question and provide tips on how to best open your boutique. 

The Worst Months

In the business we refer to post Holiday months as either death valley or the hangover months. These months are from mid December when Holiday shopping is all but wrapped up and extends through mid February. Retail sales are at an all time low for two reasons; one aforementioned Holiday hangover and the other is the transition months of Winter to Spring trend shopping. Seasonal transitions always cause a bit of a slow down but with the combined Holiday hangover these months make for a death valley of retail sales.

Best to avoid launching your boutique in these months but the good news is it gives us an idea when the best month would be to launch.

March Means Go Time

After the Holiday hangover we now enter into the Spring season. One might think Spring and Summer shopping is the best part of the year but surprisingly for boutiques it's actually Holiday months. But why we want to launch our Boutique in March is because from March to October you have a really long run way to make profits and gather some momentum that you will very much need to make it a second year.

Launching on March 1st is no guarantee to a successful boutique or opening but during these weeks shoppers coming off their long layoff of purchasing styles head over to sites and shops to look for some fresh Spring wardrobe for themselves and their children.

Back to School Shoppers

Back to school represents a major buying moment for shoppers and although school doesn't actually start until July or August Mom's out there sometimes start their shopping as early as March and April when Spring lines are first released.

How to Prep For March

Your going to get yourself a nice line up of Spring merchandise and you can try heading over to my list of distributors to pick out some you like. Vendors begin to release pre order Spring sometimes around September so you have quite a significant amount of time to shop around for the theme and lines you want to hit your demo with. 

If you're starting a brick and mortar you will also need to get yourself set up with a leasebusiness license and resales license among other things. 

Second Best Month to Launch

If March doesn't suite your timeline then the second best launch month would be August. The end of August is when Fall lines are released that include all those new cozy pieces that customers are looking for.
